Madeenah takes you on a tour to explore the political, economic, architectural and natural landscapes that have come to define contemporary Kuwait City, highlighting both past and present. These tours include the “In Place of Democracy” tour from Safat Square to Kuwait City Waterfront, the “Co-ordinates of Memory” stretching on the Abdullah Al-Ahmad Street, and the “An Unexpected Landscape” at Sulaibikhat Coast.

This tour explores the old and new buildings in the heart of the City as well as other different ‘coordinates of memory’ that can be found in trees that survived the demolition of the courtyards they shaded, in the skeletons of unfinished projects, and leftover building materials to help map Kuwait City as it once was.

This tour explores a section of Sulaibkihat Coast and discover how a landscape can tell us stories of cultures past and present. As we will see, the rings in a tree trunk show its age and the different seasons it lived. In the same way, the scattered trees of Sulaibikhat Coast, which are more than 50 years old, are living remains of a certain culture, a moment in history, and a long-forgotten place.

This tour is a tentative recollection of those coloured presentation drawings lost in August 1990. The idea of a “street of important civic status” connecting Mubarakiya (the city centre) to Sharq (the business centre) was lost back then. The site remains empty and the connection difficult between these two cities.
