Kuwait was once a nation of pearl divers and spice merchants and has become one of the worlds' largest oil producers and exporters. The shift in its economy led to a transformation in every sense. The local society with its population of 4 million is today cosmopolitan and modern and yet it remains true to its heritage and traditions.

    Kuwait stretches over 17,818 square kilometers along of the Arabian Gulf. The country is mainly covered with desert, with the exception of two large oases in the north and south. Kuwait is neighbored to the west and south by Saudi Arabia, to the north by Iraq and separated from the Asian continent on the east by the Gulf sea. The country has nine islands.

    Kuwait gained complete independence from the UK in 1961. Its Constitution was drafted by an elected 20-member Constituent Assembly and 11 ministers - who joined the Assembly later.
